Film Description

Raising Aniya follows a young dance artist in Houston, Texas, as she embarks on a journey to heal and find her voice after being displaced by a hurricane. Guided by her mentor, Aniya explores communities along the Gulf Coast impacted by environmental injustice and channels her experiences into a powerful dance performance.

Blending intimate storytelling with evocative dance and visual imagery, the film explores themes of identity, resilience, and transformation—revealing how art can serve as a tool for healing and social awareness.

John Fiege is an award-winning filmmaker whose work has screened at major festivals including SXSW, Hot Docs, Cannes, and MoMA, with distribution across platforms such as Netflix and Amazon. His films often explore the intersection of environment, community, and social justice.

Raising Aniya is part of his Machines in the South trilogy, examining the impact of industry and environmental injustice on communities in the American South. Through this work, Fiege continues to highlight powerful personal stories that reflect broader societal challenges.
